Garnacha

Garnacha is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It ripens late, so it needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain (where the grape probably originated), Sardinia, the south of France, and California’s San Joaquin Valley. The grape benefits from its tolerance to heat and drought. There are several clonal varieties of Garnacha with the thin-skinned, dark colored Garnacha Tinta (sometimes spelled Tinto) being the most common. Widely planted in northeastern and central Spain, Garnacha was long considered a “workhorse” grape of low quality suitable for blending. In the late 20th century, the success of the Garnacha based wines from Priorat in Catalonia sparked a re-evaluation of this variety.
