Terrain: Labastida, in the Rioja Alavesa, can be found at the highest, most northern edge of Rioja, were climactic conditions are nearly ideal for wine production. The soil is a mixture of clay and limestone, and is made up of mostly southwest facing terraces. Average rainfall is slightly over 15 inches per year.
Harvest: Hand picked and selected twice: initially in the vineyard, with a second selection on receipt at the winery.
Ageing: 2 months of oak ageing.

The rainfall is between 20 and 25 inches per year, but because of the proximity to the mediterranean, a lot of additional moisture comes to the plants from the sea. Altitude also contributes, with big diurnal shifts in temperature.

The vines are over 100 years old, and the varietals are uniquely suited to the harsh extremes of the high-altitude Aragon plain.

Terrain: Cariñena is situated on the high plains of the ancient Kingdom of Aragon in northern Spain. The soil is poor, with little organic matter, made up of reddish dun earth and lots of stones. The climate is continental, with hot summers and very cold
winters; low rainfall is the norm.

Unable to attend school because of the conflict, Floreal supported his family by taking care of the vineyard where–70 years later–he still goes to work every day. Monastrell, a thick-skinned varietal, that flourishes in this region, is well adapted to the harsh, desert-like conditions of southeastern Spain.
